Emmanuel Musonera
I am 14 years old. The biggest problem I have in my life now is finding a way to go back to school.
I don’t have money to pay my school fees and I want to find someone who could help support my family. If I had the chance, I would buy a dance outfit and would continue to study dance as long as possible.
Dear Emmanuel,
You might think my name is pretty long. It is Evelyn-rose Constance Thokozealiae Mtika Green Wright. The middle of my name (Thokozealiae) is from Malawi. Malawi is in Africa. My grandpa was from Africa, and he moved to Alaska, where I was born. He gave me the name Thokozealiae. I am 11 years old, and I go to E.M. Stanton school in Philadelphia. I like drawing anime, which are Japanese cartoons. When I grow up I want to be a fashion designer and cartoonist. What do you want to be when you grow up?
The neighborhood where I live is peaceful and calm. I live in West Philly, and my favorite part about it is there’s not as much as litter as other parts of the city. Also I like the park in the neighborhood because you get to run around a lot. I moved to West Philly from Alaska and Upper Darby, which is a neighborhood outside of the city. My neighbors in West Philly are nice. From my perspective, there’s not a lot of violence. There’s a lot of violence in Philadelphia though. That’s why I told you that. What’s your neighborhood like?
I hope you achieve your goals to be a professional dancer and dance all your life. Why do you want to become a dancer? Is there a particular reason? I don’t like to dance, but I like watching it. I used to take tap dancing and jazz classes on Saturdays, but I didn’t have enough time to go. Plus, I’m better at drawing and making clothes. I’m not sure why I picked you, but you seem interesting.
Some similarities between both of us are that we both know what Africa looks like. I’ve been there three times in a row. It’s beautiful. It can also be beautiful and sad. Some sad things are that homeless people drink or have drugs or have mental issues. When I went to Malawi my favorite part is when we had Obama bread buns. They didn’t look like Obama, but they called them “Obama buns.” Obama is the president of the United States, which is where I live. His full name is Barack Obama. Who’s the leader of your country?
I hope you never take drugs or give in to drugs. I haven’t, and I never will unless it’s medicine. The reason I said this is because many people take drugs in the world, and I don’t want you or me to be one of those people. I hope you write back because I want to hear more about you.
Sincerely,
Evelyn-Rose Constace Thokozealiae Mtika Green Wright.
Dear Emmanuel Musonera,
Hi Emmanuel Musonera, my name is Mia. I am 9 years old and I go to A.S.Jenks Elementary school. I have an older brother named Alain who is very tall. My brother is 12 years old. My culture is Vietnamese. People in Vietnam are arrested because they protest. They protest because they want more peace in Vietnam. During my leisure time, I like to draw dresses because I want to be a fashion designer later when I grow up.
I chose to write a letter to you because I feel bad that you have no money to go back to school and you can’t learn anything. I like you because you are hard working in your dancing. If you had money, what would you do with it? If I had more money I would save up the money to go to college. Do you take dance classes or do you learn it by yourself?
I dance like you but, I don’t dance as good as you do. Someday you could teach me how to dance better. You want to save money to have a good life like I want to. I would tell you about the wonderful books I read at my after school program, Mighty Writers. I hope you can get back to me soon!
Sincerely, Mia N.
