Olivier Twagimanya

I am 18 years old.  I live with my mother because my father has passed away.  There are five children in my family.  I love my family, especially my mother and my little brother.

When I lived at home, there was no way to go to school.  Eventually, I decided to live on the streets until I came to FIDESCO.  FIDESCO paid my school fees and encouraged me to move back to live with my family.  Life on the streets was too difficult.  I saw many children die, some turn to prostitution and others being tortured.

In life, I really like to study.  For me, school is the same as heaven.  When we are at school together, everyone smiles and shares time with one another.  I would like to be a DJ and a journalist because I believe these things can make other people happy and enjoy life.  I would like to use my life to change the way poor people live if possible.

I would like people to know that Rwanda is different from other countries in Africa.  Rwanda is known as a country that met with many difficult troubles, including genocide, but now the country has peace, freedom and respect for human rights.  There is security and minimal corruption here.

This new dance program at FIDESCO can really help us.  It keeps our minds and bodies occupied so we don’t turn back to street life or look for drugs.  I hope it continues.

    Dear Oliver,
I am on the board of the Rebecca Davis Dance Company. It is wonderful for me to see the work Rebecca Davis is doing in your country.

I enjoyed reading and listening to your story and am impressed with how you are overcoming adversity. I am a writer and like you I always loved school. I realize that I am lucky that I was able to go to good schools.

I am probably the age of your mother. I live with my husband Craig in the city of Philadelphia in the U.S. I have been to countries in Europe and in Asia, but not to Africa.

I have a 22-year-old daughter who graduated college last year. Right now she is living and working in Sweden, but will probably come home to the U.S. eventually. Also, my mother, who is no longer alive, was born in another country–Russia.

I would like to hear more about your studies and about the dance you learned. I can see in the photo that you are a very good jumper. Wow, you really jumped high in the photo I saw.

Are there any things you would like to know about the U.S.?

I look forward to hearing from you.
    Best wishes,
    Lisa

    Hi Oliver,

I met Rebecca few weeks ago and when I heard in what’s her job I was so impressed.

I’m 14 and a half years old and this September I’ll start high school. I live with my family in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I have 2 younger brothers and we live in a house. We also have a dog. His name is Odi and he is so lazy and all he does is sleeping.
My mom is a journalist so I can tell you that being a journalist is a great job. You can meet so many people and write about everything you want. You can tell your story and ” wake up the people that are still sleeping ” People just don’t know how happy and lucky they are.

I like to travel so when I get older I’ll definitely visit your country.

I can see that you are a great dancer and if you become a DJ I am sure that people will go crazy !

I really hope that you will make your dreams come true and if you have any questions for me please contact me!

    All the best,

    Sara.

Marcia Wright – Rebecca, I’m so proud of you for following your dream. These pieturcs of Miss Brooke are beautiful and your work is something to be very proud of. Can’t wait to see the entire photo shoot when your finished with them. Its very obvious you love your work because you capture such unique settings(and of course that precious little angel in the photos helped).
